Mission Study - Session 4 (2/5/2004)

After opening with prayer, the group began its session on "YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE LARGER COMMUNITY."  The purpose of this session was to examine the community around our church, to discover what its needs are, and to learn how our congregation can relate to the community.  The way a congregation interacts with the larger community has a direct bearing on its own health and vitality.

The evening's Bible verses were John 17:15-18, Matthew 5:13, and Luke 4:18-19.  These verses concern the relationship of the church to the world.  After sharing our answers to the questions relating to the specific Bible verses, we listed items the passages suggest our congregation should be doing as part of the body of Christ today.

Preach

Pray

Help the needy

Education

Study

Peacemaking

Evangelism

Worship

Support

Encourage use of gifts

Next we answered the question:  What does the Bible say about our relationship to the world?

We live in it

Spread message

Do not be guided by the world

Go into the world

Let your light shine

Lead by example

Love our neighbors

Preserve and enhance

Caretakers

Peacemakers

Feed and clothe the unfortunate

Be charitable

Finally we answered the question:  What do we believe tonight's scriptures say about what we should be doing in the world?

Spread, share, live the good news

Open our eyes

Get involved

Care for the ill and unfortunate

Outreach-inreach

Enrich quality of life

After the Bible study, we broke into small groups to consider the area around our church.  Many members of the congregation do not live in Cranbury.  On the map provided, we marked other churches, institutions, industries, businesses, and residential areas.  We also indicated distant institutions like Princeton High School that we believed to be especially important to people who live in Cranbury.  The annotated maps were presented to the group as a whole and are on display in the Parish Hall.

Next we shared the results of our windshield surveys and our interviews with local townspeople who are not church members.  The windshield survey focused on Who do you see? What are they doing?  In the interviews, townspeople were asked to state one or two concerns or needs of the community and to suggest ideal solutions.  From this information, we developed a list of Cranbury's pressing issues and voted for our top four.  The results are tabulated below.

Some of Cranbury's pressing issues are:
